Current Corporation Tax Rates

The Corporation Tax rate depends on company profits. Associated companies and shorter accounting periods can affect the thresholds, so calculations should be reviewed carefully.

19%

Small Profits Rate

Applies to companies with taxable profits under £50,000, subject to the relevant rules.

Marginal Relief

Profits Between £50,000 and £250,000

Companies in this range may pay the main rate reduced by Marginal Relief.

25%

Main Rate

Applies to companies with taxable profits over £250,000, subject to the relevant rules.

What Is a Corporation Tax Return?

A Corporation Tax return reports your company’s taxable profits or losses to HMRC. It uses your accounts, expenses, allowances and tax adjustments to calculate the Corporation Tax due.

The payment deadline is usually earlier than the filing deadline, so companies should not wait until the CT600 filing date before calculating the tax due.

A Corporation Tax return usually involves:

  • Company accounts
  • CT600 Company Tax Return
  • Corporation Tax computation
  • Review of allowable expenses and reliefs
  • Submission to HMRC using commercial software

Corporation Tax FAQs

A Corporation Tax return, usually called a Company Tax Return or CT600, reports a company’s taxable profits, Corporation Tax calculation, tax reliefs and other relevant information to HMRC.

A Company Tax Return is usually due 12 months after the end of the accounting period it covers.

For companies with taxable profits up to £1.5 million, Corporation Tax is usually due 9 months and 1 day after the end of the accounting period. Larger companies may need to pay by instalments.

For the 2026 Corporation Tax year, the small profits rate is 19% for profits under £50,000, the main rate is 25% for profits over £250,000, and Marginal Relief may apply between those limits.

Yes. We can prepare your accounts, tax computation and CT600 return, then submit the Company Tax Return to HMRC using commercial software after your approval.

A company may still need to file a Company Tax Return if HMRC has issued a notice to deliver one, even where there is no tax to pay. Dormant company rules should be checked separately.
